Hot Wire

Day 35: May 27, 2008
We have now turned our attention to the floor. On Tuesday, May 27, the electrical wires were added to the bathroom floor for the in-floor heat. Jed, the tile guy laid the wire and Harry, the electrician, checked the connection. Today (May 28) I believe the self-leveling compound will be added.

These will make my feet all toasty warm!

Mud and Sand

Days 29 - 34: May 19 - 24
This week was devoted to mudding and sanding the sheet rock. It required several coats of mud and it took awhile to dry because of the lack of ventilation in the basement. A fan and dehumidifier helped a little.

This used to be the hole at the top of my stairs.
I know have a reason to paint the entire area- it currently has lot of dings from moving furniture to the basement.

I was without laundry for again for about a week. Aaron was kind enough to hook it back up on Saturday, May 24.

Saturday Rocked!

Days 23 - 28: May 12 - 17, 2008
Aaron was unable to work on the bathroom from Monday, May 12 until Thursday, May 15. On Thursday, Aaron dealt with some finishing touches such as the bathroom fan venting and a last minute request from me for another electrical outlet in the laundry area. Aaron asked permission to work on Saturday which of course I didn't mind. He and his buddy, Chris spent the entire day sheet rocking the bathroom portion of the project. There is more to do but I am really impressed with what they accomplished on a beautiful Saturday.

Doorway and location of light switches and floor heat thermostat.

The sheet rock is a greenish color and is helping me determine the paint color I'd like. I am currently considering silver sage, atmosphere blue, or butter cream. So for those of you who don't feel like looking at Restoration Hardware- the basic color families are green, blue or yellow.

I really like how the shower is fitting under the window.

This the future home of white cabinetry. I will also have white trim throughout the bathroom.

A week in review

Days 18 - 22: May 5 - 9, 2008

On Monday, May 5, I was at home most of the day so Aaron was able to talk with me about an idea he had. He told me not to freak out which should have been my indication that this was going to be a major change in plans. He informed me that in order to have a door to my bathroom, it was going to be best to remove the existing post and replace it with a metal support pole. He had another contractor come and give his second opinion and ultimately had an inspector sign off on the idea so I felt comfortable with it. This only bought 3 extra inches but it is going to make a pretty big difference in the entry into the bathroom. See the before and after below.

Before: This post makes creating an entry into the bathroom a challenge.

After: There are actually two metal poles supporting the weight that one wooden post supported before. The pocket door will go to the left of the red pole.

Aaron hit a small obstacle with the shower door- the directions were written wrong! The company is sending a replacement part so that he can finish it. This photo doesn't tell the whole story - one side of the sliding door is loose.

Aaron framed up the rest of the bathroom. He is going to create cabinets in to make use of the space under the stairs.

April Showers

Days 15, 16 & 17: April 30 - May 2, 2008

While I was away from my home for three days, the shower was installed. This is the same shower that my parent's have in their basement bathroom and it is very sturdy compared to some shower surrounds. I know I am not fooling anyone with the fake tile but I do think it adds a bit of character.

Sterling shower surround comes in four parts - back, sides and bottom. This is a 48" shower by Sterling which is a Kohler company. I am told the plumber was impressed with this shower and plans on installing it at another job site.

This is a Kohler Memoirs Classic shower faucet.
